The Retail Experience

Visiting jewelry counters at retailers and large department stores allowed me to see exactly what was going on. I began doing this many years ago when I heard one horror story after another. This gave me firsthand insight into what my clients were experiencing. Many of my clients have had an unhappy experience and were quick to tell me their stories. Often they have encountered great frustrations and let downs and were talked into spending too much money.

The complaint I hear most often is about aggressive sales people who pushed my clients to buy an item they didn't want. They were then asked to open an in store credit card with an extremely high interest rate.

Store to Store

Many of the sales people I encountered described fine jewelry incorrectly. For example, I’ve been handed a piece of white gold and was told it was made of platinum. I’ve been told a gemstone was "natural" when clearly it had been heat treated. All too often, fine jewelry sales people were unable to identify a gem stone in their store’s showcase. To avoid embarrassment, I don’t waste my time correcting them. That’s the responsibility of their manager or owner, not me. To my surprise, many times it was the store manager who was giving wrong information. The lack of knowledge was consistent from store to store.

Listen Up

Usually, the very first thing I was asked was, “Looking for something special”? When I replied, “Yes, it’s for my mother, she loves rubies”, the sales person then proceeded to show me what they liked instead of responding to my answer. I was shown an item which was part of an in store promotion that would earn them some type of bonus. And the item it wasn’t even a ruby.

While they dragged me from showcase to showcase, they wouldn't stop talking about the "big sale" and their "store's credit card"

One thing which stood out was the fact that I was rarely asked why I was buying a piece of fine jewelry in the first place. It made me feel as if they just didn't care. They weren't even slightly curious about the milestone in my life.

Now I completely understood the horror stories I heard from my clients. Purchasing fine jewelry for a wonderful celebration of life is supposed to be a happy event. That was not the case in virtually every store I visited.
